In response to the work, Jon Mooallem writes, “We are living in a moment when the kind of rigid and meticulous order-making that I’ve always fallen back on has started to feel quixotic and futile, or even destructive sometimes—when it seems necessary to pick apart the rules and conventions we take for granted and evaluate which ones are elemental and which are merely habit. I’ll be here: listening and thinking through all of it, shaking my fist, relearning how to speak.”
